How Long Does A Kitchen Remodel Take?

Kitchen remodels can be overwhelming. Especially when you're living in the home while they are taking place. Often, while you're in the process of doing a remodel, you may be wondering what you're going to do while it's taking place, and at the same time wondering how long will the kitchen remodel even take in the first place.

The answer to this question varies o the size of your kitchen remodel. For simpler kitchen remodels or remodels of smaller sized kitchens, they can take anywhere from 4-8 weeks. While larger kitchen remodels can take anywhere from 10-12 weeks. There are some variables that can affect this such as materials lead times, fabrication of countertops and cabinets, relocation of plumbing or electrical, or unforeseen issues that may be uncovered during the demo process, and several other factors.

Kitchen remodels in older homes tend to uncover more issues than in newer homes such as required code upgrades, previous water damage or leaks that needs to be taken care of, or other factors like asbestos mitigation or lead based paints. While this isn't super common, they are things to consider when starting a kitchen remodeling project that could potentially make your project take longer than the earlier mentioned time frames.

Other scenarios to consider if you are able is your living situation during the remodel. During a kitchen remodel, your appliances are no longer useable which can make cooking and prepping food a challenge. You may also want to consider, if you stay home during the day, how you will tolerate the sounds of construction taking place in your home and how well you will hold up to all of those sounds going on for hours a day for the 4-12 weeks of the remodeling process.

Ways you can shorten up your downtime of your kitchen and have your kitchen remodel wrapped up sooner, is to work with your contractor to be proactive in getting supplies and materials ordered early and have them all available on site before the actual work begins. Having cabinets, light fixtures, plumbing fixtures, flooring and tile, and other necessary materials ready to go before the job begins allows for your contractor to get in and get going without running into days where you're just waiting for things for the project to arrive.
